Henry Scougal (1650-1678)

scougailThe monument with the skull and crossbones on the wall of Cromwell Tower commemorates the theologian Henry Scougal (1650-1678) who was a Church of Scotland minister and Professor of Divinity at the University of Aberdeen.

Scougal’s The Life of God in the Soul of Man had a major influence on the Great Awakening movement in Europe and North America, where in 1756, Benjamin Franklin printed a German version, which he distributed among the German-speaking settlers in Pennsylvania. (Source)
